New Yorkers pride themselves on being unfazed, and this September might be the one that tests it. The U.S. Open championship weekend, the opening of Fashion Week, the start of Rosh Hashanah and the 25th anniversary of 9/11 all fall between Sept. 10 and 13, sharing the same sidewalks, subway cars and Saturday night dinner reservations. That’s four days, and the rest of the month hasn’t even started.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America set this season’s preliminary official NYFW schedule for Sept. 10 through 15, with Diane von Furstenberg’s new artistic director Henry Zankov debuting on opening day and Thom Browne closing the week on Tuesday. The organization moved its Friday start time to 10 a.m. out of respect for the 9/11 anniversary.
Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown that same Friday and runs through nightfall Sunday, placing two days of the Jewish New Year directly inside NYFW’s opening weekend. This season also introduces the CFDA’s fur-free policy, banning farmed or trapped animal fur, including mink, fox, rabbit, chinchilla, karakul lamb, coyote and raccoon dog, from all collections on the official schedule. This has a narrow exception for fur obtained by Indigenous communities through traditional subsistence hunting.
Seventy shows and presentations fill the preliminary official NYFW calendar. The US Open runs its singles main draw from Aug. 30 through Sept. 13, with its championship stretch overlapping NYFW’s first four days. The Hebrew calendar places Rosh Hashanah on Sept. 11-13 and Yom Kippur on Sept. 20-21. The United Nations opens its 81st General Assembly session on Sept. 8, with High-Level Week beginning later in the month and the General Debate running Sept. 22-26 and Sept. 28. The dates come from different scheduling calendars, creating an unusually dense stretch for the city.
US Open finals collide with Fashion Week’s opening
The US Open’s 2026 edition is the largest in its nearly 150-year history, with 22 days of tennis and entertainment including eight days of free public grounds admission. Its final weekend sits directly inside NYFW’s opening days. Women’s singles semifinals take place Thursday, Sept. 10, the same day Fashion Week opens, and men’s semifinals follow on Friday. The women’s singles final is Saturday, and the men’s singles final is Sunday, both during Rosh Hashanah.
Flushing Meadows draws its own massive crowd in Queens. At the same time, Midtown fills with fashion industry press, international buyers and street-style photographers who treat the sidewalk between venues as a runway of its own. Tennis fans in sneakers and sunscreen share subway platforms with editors in heels heading to showrooms and families dressed for synagogue. Across the five boroughs, Rosh Hashanah services fill synagogues and families sit down to festive meals of apples dipped in honey and round challah, traditions that mark the start of the Jewish New Year across neighborhoods from the Upper West Side to Crown Heights.
Downtown, the 25th anniversary of 9/11 carries its own solemn weight across a city that lived through it and still marks the day. Everyone shares the same transit system, the same restaurants and the same Saturday night.
Yom Kippur, UNGA and Climate Week follow within days
NYFW wraps on Tuesday, Sept. 15, and the city gets five days before the next wave. Yom Kippur begins at sundown Sunday, Sept. 20. The next morning, the United Nations General Assembly enters High-Level Week, with the General Debate bringing world leaders to Midtown and the East Side from Sept. 22 through Sept. 28. Climate Week NYC runs across nearly the same window, Sept. 20 through 27, with its own international delegation of policy leaders and climate executives.
Fashion Week and the General Debate are separated by a full week, but the break barely registers. The succession of major events may put added pressure on hotels, restaurants and transportation across Midtown and the East Side, with hotel demand from one week’s visitors carrying into the next.
New York’s September is already one of its busiest
New York City averaged 84.2% hotel occupancy in 2025, the highest rate among the top 25 U.S. markets, across approximately 124,000 rooms. NYC Tourism + Conventions projects 66.3 million visitors in 2026, with domestic travel expected to surpass pre-pandemic records.
Stacking the US Open, Fashion Week, the High Holidays, UNGA and Climate Week into the same 30 days creates an unusually dense month for hotels, restaurants and transportation across all five boroughs. Few cities face this particular combination of sporting, fashion, religious, diplomatic and climate events within the same calendar month.
September in New York has always been its own season, the month when summer finally relents and the city remembers what it’s actually built for. In 2026, four separate worlds showed up for the same 30 days, each following its own calendar, each drawing its own crowd, all of them descending on the same five boroughs at once. For many New Yorkers, the practical response to all of it will be the same as always. Check the subway app, leave 10 minutes earlier and keep moving.
