A third of Americans don’t know when Labor Day falls this year — or what the holiday actually commemorates, according to new research.
The survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that only 66% of respondents were able to correctly point out that Labor Day is observed on September 7th this year.
A shocking one in twenty (4%) didn’t think there was a Labor Day in 2026 at all.
The Talker Research poll found that many Americans remain unclear about what Labor Day actually celebrates and why the holiday exists.
One in five Americans (18%) wrongly believe that the day is meant to commemorate the founding of labor unions, while one in ten (9%) believe it’s the official start of autumn.
A confused six percent believe it’s meant to celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution, while four percent think it honors the end of World War II.
However, a knowledgeable 61% of Americans got it right: Labor Day is a salute to the contributions and achievements of American workers.
But despite the day meant to be a restful one, very few respondents will be taking it easy that day.
When asked if Labor Day is a weekend where they choose to go light on chores and housework, only 30% said yes.

And while Labor Day isn’t the official start of autumn, most Americans do feel summer is over by the time it rolls around.
When asked what event officially signals the end of summer, Labor Day weekend emerged as the top answer, with 25% calling it the seasonal turning point.
Back-to-school season and cooler weather followed closely behind, tying at 22%, while 13% said the start of football season marks summer’s end.
Meanwhile, just eight percent look to the actual autumn equinox to signal the transition into fall.
On the topic of three-day weekends, the survey identified that most Americans are ready to make it the new normal.
The poll showed that 64% of Americans agree that every weekend should be three days long, with 38% going so far as to “strongly agree.”
