One last getaway is still within reach this year; it just costs more to grab it.
Late summer runs on its own countdown clock, with pool decks that were packed in July starting to empty out and the last real run of warm weather narrowing by the day. That shrinking window is what makes this particular weekend feel less like an option and more like a last call.
This year’s final rush comes with a steeper price tag, as domestic Labor Day fares run 26% higher than last year, international routes climb 16% and the overall increase lands at 23% once every route is factored in. Rental cars are the rare bright spot, down 9% overall even as flights get pricier.
The best and worst days to fly this Labor Day
Timing still matters more than almost anything else a traveler controls, and the Friday before Labor Day is proof, having historically ranked as the busiest departure day in that window and drawing far more travelers than any other day in the surrounding two weeks. Last year, that Friday saw 22% more travelers pass through airport security than the following Friday. Thursday is no bargain either, ranking as the third-busiest travel day in the same window.
Anyone hoping to dodge the rush might consider flying out the Tuesday before the holiday instead, when airports run noticeably quieter, though that means giving up extra vacation days most travelers don’t have to spare. A shorter trip built around a Saturday departure splits the difference. Crowds run lighter than Friday’s rush, and there’s usually still enough of the day left on arrival to make it worth it. Coming home is its own puzzle. Labor Day itself is the busiest return day, while flying back Sunday or waiting until midweek tends to mean less crowded airports.
Where the cheapest seats are this year
Destination choice matters as much as timing this year, since not every market is following the same price curve. Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Atlanta currently rank among the least expensive average fares for the holiday weekend, with Raleigh, Dallas and Orlando close behind. San Diego, Houston, Chicago and Washington, D.C. round out the more affordable end of the list.
San Juan, Puerto Rico breaks from that broader price trend entirely, with flights actually down 16% compared to last year even as fares elsewhere in the Caribbean and beyond keep climbing. It’s a reminder that flexibility on destination can matter as much as flexibility on dates.
Travelers are choosing to spend more this Labor Day
Fewer Americans are traveling this summer, but the ones who are going are spending more to do it. Only 45% of Americans are planning a summer vacation with paid lodging this year, the lowest share in six years, even as those who are going plan to spend 17% more on their longest trip than they did in 2025. Trip frequency is holding steady too, with travelers expecting to take roughly the same number of trips as last year. What’s actually shrinking is the share of Americans planning a summer vacation with paid lodging.
The extra spending is showing up in unexpected ways this year, as more than a third of summer travelers say they’ll work at some point during their longest trip, up from under a quarter in 2025, laptop in tow right alongside the sunscreen.
Labor Day distills that trade-off into something concrete, even though that spending data reflects summer travel broadly, not this one weekend specifically. The travelers who show up this year are, by and large, the ones willing to pay for it.
The travel calendar itself seems to be expanding to accommodate that change. The share of summer trips taking place after Labor Day has climbed from 12% in 2022 to 20% this year. Fewer Americans are treating the holiday weekend as summer’s hard stop, and more are simply picking up the trip on the other side of it.
