College football fans are used to hauling their own tents and tables, setting up their own tailgate and hoping the entry lines move fast on game day. This year, several programs spent the offseason redesigning how fans experience the hours before kickoff, from tailgate zones to stadium operations. Opening weekend starts this week, and the pregame is where fans will feel it first.
The Collegiate Licensing Company launched College Colors Day in 2005 as a way for fans, students and alumni to show their school spirit by wearing their team’s colors and gear, and the 22nd annual celebration is Sept. 4. For most of its history, the tradition has played out the same way: dig out a jersey or a ball cap, wear it to the office, post a photo, move on with the weekend. The pregame itself was familiar too, built around whatever setup fans could bring in their own cars. This year, the campuses behind some of opening weekend’s biggest games have put just as much thought into what happens before kickoff.
Oklahoma opens its new tailgate on College Colors Day
The University of Oklahoma will play its home opener on Sept. 4 against UTEP, a rare Friday night kickoff that falls directly on College Colors Day. When fans arrive at Owen Field, they’ll find a new option waiting on Boyd Lawn near the Jones Family Welcome Center. Professionally managed tailgate packages through REVELXP let groups reserve a fully furnished space with tent, chairs, setup and teardown all handled.
The North Oval, which the university opened to free public tailgating for the first time last season, will return on the same terms. Fans can still claim a spot on a first-come, first-served basis and bring their own gear. The university said the response to last year’s launch exceeded expectations and prompted the decision to add the managed option alongside the existing free setup. Boomer Bash, OU’s official alumni tailgate, also returns to the North Oval this fall with food trucks, giveaways and an LED videoboard showing college football from around the country for select games.
Georgia Tech used its own engineers to rethink game day
Georgia Tech announced 100 improvements to the Bobby Dodd Stadium experience for 2026. The athletics department partnered with the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Scheller College of Business to analyze every element of its 2025 game day operations using fan surveys and data modeling. The partnership produced recommendations that touch every phase of getting to, getting into and moving around the stadium on Saturdays.
The data-driven approach produced measurable results. Ticket-scanning capacity will increase 35% with 80 new scanning pedestals deployed across entry gates. Concession points of sale will grow by 40%, and the school has added grab-and-go stands and new food vendors throughout the concourse.
Georgia Tech also partnered with Queues, a computer vision startup founded by a Georgia Tech alum, to track real-time congestion at concession stands and restrooms using ceiling-mounted sensors. New tailgate experience options and the return of the Helluva Block Party pregame festival to Bobby Dodd Stadium’s north end after three seasons on North Avenue round out a pregame overhaul debuting Sept. 3 against Colorado.
Houston rebuilt its student section and tailgate footprint
The University of Houston expanded its student presence inside TDECU Stadium by moving every student ticket holder into the 100-level. The university said the move strengthens student presence and amplifies game day atmosphere.
Outside the stadium, the tailgating area has been improved with additional food trucks and vendors. A revived kids program called Shasta’s Kids Club returns with a new Kids’ Zone adjacent to the tailgate. Inside, Houston added an in-venue DJ at all home games along with new pyrotechnics, cryo effects and fireworks throughout each game. A new program called Coogs Unlimited Gameday Experiences will give fans behind-the-scenes access to football operations on game days when the Cougars open Sept. 5 against Oregon State.
Fans are approaching the season differently
The university-level redesigns are happening alongside changes in how individual fans prepare for football season. About 47% of college shoppers purchased or plan to purchase secondhand or refurbished items for the school year, up from 40% in 2025. The data points to a broader appetite for secondhand shopping among college shoppers as the school year begins.
Licensed collegiate merchandise sales grew collectively among partner institutions during the first half of 2026. Fan interest in college gear remains strong even as where and how fans find it continues to evolve. ESPN’s College GameDay will open its 40th season with a milestone 500th road show on Sept. 5 in Baton Rouge, coming off the most-watched year in the program’s history.
Fans arriving on Sept. 4 will find schools that used the offseason to rebuild the hours before kickoff from the ground up. Twenty-two years in, College Colors Day still starts with putting on the right colors. The game day waiting on the other side of the gate is the part that gives fans a reason to show up early.
