Apple picking is unpredictable this fall, but the orchards worth finding go way beyond fruit

NOAA’s national climate data confirmed what orchards from New York to Wisconsin already knew by late April. March 2026 was the warmest March on record for the contiguous United States, and the early warmth pushed apple trees into bloom ahead of schedule, leaving them exposed when a hard freeze hit during peak bloom in late April.

Growers across parts of the Hudson Valley, Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest lost enough of the crop that some operations are skipping picking season entirely and managing their trees for 2027. The damage was uneven, leaving some orchards with sharply reduced crops while others saved enough fruit to run picking seasons this fall.

The fall road trip window is wide open

Close to half of U.S. adults plan to travel this fall, and nearly 60% of them plan to drive. New England and the western mountain region are building double-digit year-over-year growth in fall bookings, and the week of Oct. 5 is showing the strongest demand of the season. For apple-minded travelers specifically, road trip season and picking season line up almost perfectly this fall, and the orchards that came through the spring with full crops are the ones worth building a weekend around.

The Northeast orchards still picking

The April freeze carved a sharp line across parts of the Northeast, with orchards in the Hudson Valley’s Ulster and Orange Counties and much of Pennsylvania absorbing significant crop losses. The Connecticut River Valley fared better, and Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, Connecticut, has fruit on the trees and a picking season on the calendar.

The property has been growing fruit on the same land since 1741, spanning 1,100 acres with 30,000 apple trees and nearly 100 fruit varieties across the season. A year-round farm market, bakery, corn maze and two 18-hole championship golf courses plus a nine-hole course make the property a destination that extends well past the picking fields, and USA Today named it the best apple orchard in the nation in 2025.

Near Syracuse, Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards in LaFayette, New York, is a fifth-generation family operation founded in 1911 that dedicates 50 acres to pick-your-own alone, one of the largest sections in the state. The Apple Hill Campus, open Thursday through Sunday, houses the 1911 Established tasting room for hard ciders, spirits and wines all produced tree-to-bottle on-site by the first distillery in Onondaga County to hold a distillery license.

A new 6-acre Adventure Park with a mountain slide, zip line and petting zoo opened in August 2026. The establishment joined the bakery, general store and concert series that already draw visitors who come for the apples and end up spending the afternoon.

Still picking in Door County

Door County, Wisconsin, sits in the upper Midwest region where the spring freeze hit growers hard, but the peninsula’s orchards have apples on the trees and picking seasons running this fall. Cherry may be the peninsula’s summer headliner, but fall belongs to the apple.

Lautenbach’s Orchard Country has been growing and harvesting fruit in the region since 1955 across 100 acres of orchards and vineyards, now run by three siblings. Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Cortland and half a dozen other varieties come off the trees throughout the season, with pick-your-own Macintosh opening Sept. 19.

Lautenbach’s produces over 40 estate-grown wines and hard ciders on-site, from dry to sparkling to spiced, with tastings and flights in the market’s tasting room. A farm market stocked with products from small regional producers and a bakery turning out cherry pies give visitors a reason to stay well past the picking fields.

Farther up the peninsula in Sister Bay, Seaquist Orchards is a multigenerational family operation farming more than 950 acres of cherries and 30 acres of apples. The farm market has been a Door County destination for over 25 years, stocked with ciders, jams, fudge and seasonal staples, and pick-your-own apples are available weekends only in October.

Apple picking in the southern mountains

The southern Appalachian orchards on this list have fruit on the trees and picking seasons on the calendar this fall. Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge, Georgia, widely described as the largest apple orchard in the Southeast, has operated under the same family since 1943 and grows more than 50 apple varieties alongside strawberries, peaches, blueberries and blackberries. 

A farm winery that grows, presses, ferments and cans its own hard apple cider on-site, a candy kitchen and a bakery whose fried apple pies have built a regional following give visitors more to do than most travelers expect from a mountain orchard. The Georgia Apple Festival in nearby Ellijay, now in its 55th year, runs Oct. 10-11 and 17-18.

Farther up the Blue Ridge corridor in western North Carolina, Sky Top Orchard in Flat Rock sits atop Mt. McAlpine with panoramic mountain views that make the drive worth it before a single apple is picked. The family-owned farm has been growing apples here since 1967 across about 100 acres, with over 20 varieties ripening from mid-August through early November.

Free admission and free parking set Sky Top Orchard apart from most operations of its size, and wagon rides, apple cannons, a bee train and gem mining keep families on the property for hours. USA Today nominated the establishment for its 10Best Best Apple Orchard list for 2026, and U-pick is available by appointment, with walk-ups accepted while supplies last. 

A full harvest on the Pacific side

Washington’s apple country came through the spring in far better shape than the hardest-hit parts of the East. Federal crop forecasts put the state’s 2026 commercial apple production at only about 2% below last year, making the Pacific Northwest one of the most stable growing regions in the country this season. Bellewood Farms & Distillery in Lynden grows 22 varieties of apples and pears across 62 acres split between two orchards, making it the largest apple orchard in Western Washington. 

The farm houses the state’s first farm-to-bottle apple distillery with a tasting room and weekend tours, a cafe and a bakery keeping apple cider donuts coming through the season. Mount Baker fills the horizon behind the orchard rows, and the 2026 U-pick runs Wednesday through Sunday from Labor Day weekend through the end of October.

Seven orchards spread across the country, from Connecticut and upstate New York to Door County, the Georgia mountains and Washington, share something beyond strong 2026 seasons. Each has built well beyond picking into farm-sourced food, on-site experiences and, in several cases, their own cideries and tasting rooms, all designed for a full day or a weekend. That distinction matters more than usual this fall, because when fruit supplies are limited across the region, a destination orchard with food, activities and other attractions can still make the drive worthwhile even if the picking window is shorter than expected. 

Apple varieties ripen in a sequence from August into November, and each orchard’s picking calendar changes week to week depending on weather and demand. A September trip catches early-season varieties, while October brings more peak-season options and fall color. As of early September, all seven destinations have apple-picking operations or fall activities on the calendar, but field conditions, available varieties and hours can change quickly, so checking each orchard’s website before heading out is worth the extra minute.
