THE GORGE — Memorial Day, celebrated Monday, May 27, will again see gatherings throughout the region to honor those whose lives were lost while serving their country in active military service.
Klickitat, Skamania counties
White Salmon American Legion Post 87 and Carson Legion Post 137 will sponsor a veteran’s memorial ceremony at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day at the White Salmon Cemetery. The patriotic event will honor the sacrifices and service of passed local veterans, said a press release. Approximately 12 deceased veterans will be inducted into the “Walk of Honor,” each having a personalized bronze plaque permanently installed on the walkway. The approximately 30-minute event will include a flag ceremony, guest speaker, and a possible flyover of vintage military aircraft from the Hood River Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM). Plenty of parking and chairs will be available. All are welcome.
Hood River
The annual service at Idlewilde Cemetery, 980 Tucker Road, begins at 11 a.m. with the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Color Guard presentation of the colors.
This year, there will be a special presentation on the story of the Four Chaplains: Rev. George L. Fox (Methodist), Dr. Alexaner Goode (Jewish), Rev. Clark V. Poling (Reformed, Dutch) and Fr. John P. Washington (Catholic). On Feb. 3, 1943, a torpedo launched from a submarine struck the ship Dorchester’s engine room. Though panic spread throughout the ship, four men — chaplains — helped evacuate crewmembers while sacrificing them-selves, going down with the boat, arms linked and in prayer. Of the 904 men on board, 209 survived.
Wasco County
Annual services in The Dalles begin at noon at the Sorosis Park Viewpoint. This year's program is presented by the American Legion Post 19; Mayor Rich Mays will be the feature speaker. All servicemen, active, and reserve, as well veterans of all conflicts and all eras and their family members are encouraged to attend.
The community of Wasco will mark the holiday with a service at the Wasco Train Depot beginning at 10 a.m. Memorial Day. A country breakfast will be held at the Wasco School from 7-10 a.m. There is also a classic car show, artisan market, pastry auction planned for the day.
