Here are the latest reports from the bowling leagues up on the Heights at Hood River’s Orchard Lanes.
Monday night Industrial (eighth week of nine in round three)
Standings (top teams):
1. Mt. Hood BBQ, 147 points
2. Pat’s Pro Shop, 123
It’s down to a two-team race for first place in round three, with just one week to go. Match results from March 17: Orchard Lanes trounced MTS 23-2 as Nancy Asai and Carl Casey carried the ball for the Lanes trio. Nancy racked up a beautiful 662 series on games of 232, 225 and 205 while Carl chipped in a big 247 game. Triple T’S waxed Hood River Supply 22-3 on the powerful shots of Tyson Trout, who fired a mighty fine 235 game; Randy’s Painting beat The Crew 18.5-6.5; Mt. Hood BBQ topped Pat’s Pro Shop 18-7; Ol’7-10 dumped Decavo 17-8 due to the spellbinding slants of Lynn Spellman, who fashioned a huge 768 series on games of 277, 246 and 245; and The Rollers beat Clear Cutters 17-8 despite the best efforts of Rod Pratt, who tossed a cool 244 game for the Cutters.
Star Bowlers: Lynn Spellman, 171 pins over average, and Nancy Asai, 110 pins over average.
Wednesday afternoon Colts & Fillies senior league
Standings on the top teams with three weeks to go in the second half:
1. Cousins, 31 wins
2. Rice Krispies, 28 wins
3. Gutt-er Done, 28 wins
4. Rolling Pins, 27.5 wins
5. Jessie’s Team, 27 wins
Match results from March 19: The first-half winner and long-time leader in the second half, Cousins, got drop-kicked last week by a red-hot Rice Krispies threesome, losing all four games to the famous breakfast stalwarts. Of course it didn’t hurt that Rice Krispies’ hot-shot anchor-man Mr. Lynn Spellman, continued his white-hot assault on the poor pins this week, rolling a gaudy 708 series (his second 700 of the week!) on games of 245, 241 and 222 while his team-mate Ken Kramer added a 200 game to the whitewashing. Awesome 3 also blanked We Tried, 4-0. Jessie’s Team thumped Rolling Pins 3-1 thanks to Dick Sherrell’s lofty 256 game which was just too much to overcome for the Matt Phillips and gregarious Ed Busick of the Pins, who rolled 212 and 201 games, respectively. And in the last contested match, Skamaniacs split with Pins in Low Places 2-2 because Dave Baumsteiger tallied a spiffy 226 game for the Maniacs, but his efforts were essentially canceled out by Gordon Pillon’s 201 game for the Lowly Pins gang.
Star bowler: Lynn Spellman, 120 pins over average.
Wednesday night Fraternal league
Standings of the top teams with four weeks to go in round 3:
1. Mt. Hood BBQ, 112 points
2. The Red Rockets, 94 points
3. Hood River Athletic Club, 88 points
Match results on March 19: It was a record-setting night for The Red Rockets, who slammed the door on Bloom Auto Body, 24½-½. The Red Rockets were paced by guru painter who is also their talented anchorman, Jaymes “Jimbo” Youtsey, who toyed with the sticks crunching them with a stellar scratch 704 three-game series; their irascible and energetic middle-man Court Barker, who notched a mighty fine scratch 653 series; and their lead-off man, emerging star trundler Josue Chavarria, our unanimous Star of the Week. Josue found the Holy Grail of Bowling last week, turning into a version of an AI strike machine, posting heroic scores of 211, 214 and a glittering 267 for a fabulous 692 series. That was Josue’s first 600 series of the season, doing it in such an overwhelming way — he just missed shooting 700, which is kind of a magical number that our top bowlers in town can only achieve occasionally.
OK, let’s go one step further to show just how good The Red Rockets were on this night. This is the highest scor-ing league in the Gorge, no question. Out of all the other top bowlers in this league, most of whom are the best bowlers around, on this night The Red Rockets took over the High Scratch Team Game and High Scratch Team Series in the Fraternal league! That is a really big deal from a previously unheralded trio. Their new High Scratch Game is 725 pins, a 241 average per man, and their new High Scratch Series is 2,049 pins for the three of them, a 227 average per man. Those are impressive numbers indeed and they stand alone, there is no handicap in them at all! Welcome to the big time Rockets, you are definitely born again and can now stand with anyone in the local hotshot bowling circles!
In the other matches: Mt. Hood BBQ toasted The Bowling Stones 17-8; Tres Psicos humbled Orchard Lanes 17-8; and Get Hu’sum BBQ won in a photo finish against Ten in the Pit 13-12.
More high scores: The Bowling Stones’ Chad Mason, 244 game and 678 series, and Ciena Brittle, 231 game; and for Tres Psicos, Skip (Nationals) Whitley, 235 game.
Star bowlers: Josue Chavarria, a whopping 224 pins over average (!), and Jimbo Youtsey, 122 pins over average; Coby Henning for Get Hu’sum BBQ,104 pins over average.
Thursday afternoon County league
Here are the current standings of the top teams in the league with one week to go in the second half:
1. The Gutter Balls, 28 wins
2. Holy Rollers, 27 wins
3. Lady Ballers, 24 wins
4. Stop, Drop and Bowl, 24 wins
Match results from March 13 and March 20: As you can see from the standings things are tight in the second half. In the past two weeks of matches, Stop, Drop and Bowl has made a big move, winning seven out of eight games; Holy Rollers have won five games; and The Gutter Balls split with four wins. The Lady Ballers are sliding backward, having only won one game, but they really have nothing to lose because by winning the first half of the league they are already in the roll-off for the league championship, which will take place in just a couple weeks.
High scores: The Incredibowls, Rod Pratt, 247, 203 games and Matt Stoneberg, 200 game; Stan Pratnicki for Over the Line, 214 game; James Reck for Blind Bowlers, 211 game; Joe Towne for the Munsons, 209 game; Victor Flores for the BS-ers, 206 game; and Michael Stenberg for the Unbowlievables, 205 game.
