At Wy’east Middle School, the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is available for students. Learners are individually recommended by teachers.
Many high school students who joined AVID during their middle school years have grown a lot because the class goal is to give students skills to be successful and eventually enroll in a four-year college.
AVID students have to put in more effort, but in the long run, it pays off. The main focus in AVID is to help students to apply the necessary skills to succeed in high school and college and to challenge themselves with daily tasks while supporting each other.
Some of the skills taught in AVID are: Note-taking, critical thinking and organization skills. Students learn how to take and use notes to study, identify a point of confusion to focus on during a tutoring session, and are graded on how organized their binder is.
They are also educated on how to manage their time. Practicing time management on tests can raise scores on the SAT. In addition, effective planner usage can help with both organization and time management.
Learning all of these skills helps students support and challenge each other.
To support and challenge each other in AVID, we do teambuilders, tutoring sessions and Socratic Seminars. These tasks require the whole class to participate and help one another.
In AVID, students stay focused and work hard which helps everyone learn.
If a student ever has the chance of getting into the AVID program, they should take the opportunity. They might think it’s hard work, but in reality, AVID is a very beneficial class.
Because of the hard work required, some students made the mistake of not applying for AVID when they got invited in sixth grade. These students now regret it, knowing that in the end, the hard work will pay off.
In conclusion, AVID is a program that leads students to success and gets them ready for college.
