Kelly Hume, Columbia High School
WHITE SALMON — Columbia High School (CHS) Vice Principal Kelly Hume has been promoted to co-principal beginning in the 2025-2026 school year.
“This transition is part of a strategic leadership plan as current Principal Craig McKee plans to retire of the end of that school year,” White Salmon Valley School District (WSVSD) Superintendent Rich Polkinghorn told school board members at the March 28 meeting. The board approved the change.
The co-principal model will also allow McKee to mentor Hume before she ultimately becomes principal, as well as maintain the momentum of what Polkinghorn called “key CHS initiatives” like AVID implementation and expansion of the district’s online school.
Feedback from staff and students on the move has been positive, with staff describing Hume as a strong communicator and listener; students described her as approachable and never too busy to help.
Polkinghorn said Hume “is truly among the top-tier school leaders I’ve ever worked with. Like staff and students have affirmed, she is a systems thinker, a collaborative problem solver, she speaks Spanish, and she gets things done. In my short time in the district, Kelly has quickly become someone I know I can count on to do outstanding work.”
