Chelsea Marr photoTHE DALLES — Starting March 10, Home At Last shelter in The Dalles will be under new management, as Central Oregon Animal Friends steps back from shelter operations. They will hand the reins, or rather the leash, to the Columbia Gorge Humane Society, who will operate the shelter going forward.
According to shelter adoption coordinator Josee Beam, the change has been happening for a while, as board members have left and new ones have come to replace them.
“It was just time,” Beam said. “We have some board members that have been with us for quite a few years, and they’ve been retiring and moving on to the next part of their life.”
Despite the name change, most of the company’s operations will stay the same, Beam said.
“We are now going to be known as the Columbia Gorge Humane Society, but all the pets, all our dogs and cats and our employees are going to be staying the same,” she said. “It’s basically just the name of our company and our payroll.”
There will be a few additional changes, Beam said, including the return of their community spay and neuter program, where they give vouchers for spay and neuter surgeries for those who adopt. It was previously a popular program, she said, but had stopped within the last year.
Beam said they also wanted to start allowing people into the shelter again, which hadn’t been done since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, she said the staff was looking forward to the coming changes.
“We are super excited,” she said. “All the employees are pumped. We have amazing kennel techs and an amazing manager that’s been taking over now too.”
Beam also said that, as was the case with Home At Last, the Columbia Gorge Humane Society will be funded largely by donations. They are also still seeking foster homes for animals. Those interested in volunteering, donating supplies or making a monetary donation can visit their website columbiagorgehs.org.
They will also be continuing the cans and bottles recycling program started by Home At Last. Bottles and cans can be brought to the Columbia Gorge Humane Society, located at 200 River Road in The Dalles.
