THE DALLES — Mayor Rich Mays awarded the prize for “Most Patriotic” float in The Dalles’ Fourth of July parade to Fort Dalles Floozies and Friends, who trotted down the parade route in Carrie’s Classic Carriage, costumed in layers of red, white and blue finery, some historical costumes.
Carrie’s Classic Carriage, operated by Carrie Swearingen, drives tour boat passengers around town in summer and gives holiday rides at Christmas.
“The Gals From The Dalles” are a historic-themed group of women who gather to promote The Dalles’ historical attractions.
The 2024 Fort Dalles Fourth Hometown Parade drew 38 entries, about 10 more than last year, said Lisa Farquarson, CEO of The Dalles Area Chamber of Commerce. The mayor’s choice for most patriotic was the only award given out.
“Everybody had fun, everybody seemed to enjoy it,” said Farquarson. “That was the whole point.”
The Dalles Kiwanis Club volunteered to organize the lineup. “We give them some it’s not enough for what they do for us,” said Farquarson.
A concert by Gorge Winds followed the parade at The Dalles City Park, honoring veterans with a military salute. The audience cheered veterans who stood for recognition — and the two F-16 jets that roared low overhead, almost drowning out a patriotic song.
“I am thrilled to share that our community truly came together with red, white, blue, and smiles for all to see ... A special thank you to The Dalles Kiwanis for your incredible work in organizing the parade and ensuring everything rolled out on time! The day was packed with family fun activities, and a huge thanks goes to Smoke Wring and The Landing for their contributions to our community and families,” said Farquarson.
