Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Steven Ray Anderson of Mosier, Oregon, passed away on Sept. 19, 2025. He was 76 years old. Steve was born on July 29, 1949, in Kearney, Nebraska, to Daryl Anderson and Irene Best. He was raised in and went to school in Axtell, Nebraska, where his parents were farmers. Steve attended Kearney State College and then began working in construction and civil engineering.
As a young man, Steve felt the pull of the mountains of the American West. In 1972, he moved to Colorado, where he first married and welcomed his first son, Aaron, in 1975. He then moved to Southern Oregon where he welcomed a second son, Drew, in 1977. Steve worked many interesting jobs, and eventually landed in Bend, Oregon, where he joined the ski patrol for Mount Bachelor. Steve took up windsurfing at this time, which eventually led him to relocating to Hood River, Oregon, and then to making annual visits to La Ventana/El Sargento in Baja Sur, Mexico. In 1997, Steve purchased a geodesic dome house overlooking the Sea of Cortez in El Sargento, where he spent a good portion of each year windsurfing, kiting, biking, and exploring the mountains.
Steve was remarried in 2004 to Jane Anderson and settled with her into their home in Mosier. When Steve retired in 2012, he had the freedom to pursue his many passions full time — wind sports, mountain biking, retrofitting e-bikes, hiking, camping, reading, guitar, pickleball, and spending quality time with friends in both the Gorge and Baja. Steve embraced his role as Grandpa, going to countless soccer and wrestling matches, baseball games, and dance recitals, and going on many bike rides, camping trips, and visits to the Oregon coast with his grandkids and family.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister Deb (and Michael) McMinamen; sons Aaron Anderson and Drew Anderson; stepdaughters Carly (and Sean) Borton and Britney (and Justin) Menasco; grandchildren Lillian Hutton, Ben Borton, Gabe Borton, Nate Borton, Sami Borton, Marley Menasco, and Morgan Menasco; and his beloved wife Janie.
Steve loved having a good dog as a companion, loved sharing meals, and could strike up a conversation with anyone. He lived each day with gratitude, humility, and appreciation for each sunrise and sunset. Who could ever forget his loud, warm laugh, his generosity, or his delight in dad jokes.
A celebration of life for Steve will be held from 1:30-4:30 on Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Underwood Community Center in Underwood, Washington. Stories and photos of Steve can be viewed and shared at www.steverayanderson.com.
