HOOD RIVER — With advances in technology, sampling, and data analysis, FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is looking to update regional flood maps for the National Flood Insurance Program. If Hood River plans to participate in this insurance program, it will have to update their own maps to reflect FEMA’s changes, as reported at a Nov. 12 City Council meeting.

Planning Director Dustin Nilsen said the flood map updates will affect less than 50 properties total near Indian Creek, Phelps Creek, Henderson Creek, and the Columbia River. Both the City and Port of Hood River are major landholders that expect to be affected by map changes.
