THE GORGE — Are you interested in attending this year’s Oregon State Fair? Interested in public education and especially one room schoolhouses?
You can demonstrate this interest by volunteering for a two-hour shift hosting the 1912 Criterion School during the Oregon State Fair and receive free parking and admission. Contact Volunteer Coordinator Carla Mundt, mundtc@gmail.com or 541-967-1294. Shifts are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 1-3 p.m., or 3-5 p.m.
This annual opportunity, sponsored by the Oregon Retired Educators’ Association, celebrates the Criterion School’s 50th year in Salem. Built and operated from 1912-1925, the school passed into private ownership in 1969. In 1976, it was donated to the State of Oregon and moved to the Oregon State Fairgrounds that same year. It still stands today as a tribute to public education.  Â
