THE DALLES — Columbia Gorge Community College (CGCC) is excited to announce the launch of its new First-Year Experience (FYE) program, “FYE 100: College Planning and Survival Skills.” This 4-credit course is designed to equip students with the tools and strategies they need to successfully navigate their academic journey and overcome barriers to degree completion.
College students, especially first-generation students, many of whom are from low-income families or communities of color, are facing unique challenges: many of them may not have the same resources or knowledge to navigate college systems as their peers whose parents have college degrees.
Recognizing these challenges, CGCC has developed FYE 100 to provide comprehensive support for all first-year students, with content integrated throughout that will especially benefit those who are first in their families to attend college. FYE 100 guides students in creating financial, academic, and career plans, and helps them develop essential skills in communication, resource identification, and technology. In addition, students will explore the importance of community, cultural, and environmental responsibility within their chosen career paths.
“FYE 100 is more than just a class — it’s a roadmap to success,” said Jarett Gilbert, vice-president of Instructional Services at CGCC. “We understand that the first year of college can be overwhelming for anyone, but especially for first-generation students. This program is designed to empower all of our students with the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in college and beyond.”
FYE 100 is a key component of CGCC’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. By addressing both academic and non-academic challenges, the course aims to ensure that more students achieve their educational and career goals.
