Cin Ahrens
WHITE SALMON — Columbia High School class of 2022 graduate Cin Ahrens was awarded the President’s Medalist Award, Freshman, at the University of Washington in Seattle on Feb. 27.
The President’s Medal is awarded to three students each year — one freshman, one sophomore and one junior. As the 2022-2023 freshman medalist, Ahrens received a $5,000 scholarship.
The medalists were “selected by a committee for their high GPAs, rigor of classes and number of honors courses,” according to a University of Washington Undergraduate Academic Affairs press release. “All three are students in the University Honor Program, completing the Interdisciplinary Honors track.”
Ahrens and twin sister CC are double majoring in computer science and mathematics at UW and received full tuition scholarships for all four hears through the Honor Program.
At CHS, Ahrens participated in robotics with her twin, sparking her interest in computer science, said the UW press release. Now at UW, she is a data science intern for King County’s Water and Land Resources Division, where she “designs and implements machine learning models to predict flooding around Lake Sammamish,” said the press release. “She also loves to read, lift weights, draw and play music.”
Parents are Kirsten and Mark Ahrens of White Salmon, who said CC “missed out on the award by the slimmest of margins but is thrilled her sister received it.”
