Stephen Colbert will welcome former CBS Evening News co-anchor John Dickerson to The Late Show next Tuesday (February 24) for a special live episode to air after President Trump‘s State of the Union address.
Dickerson’s appearance comes about two months after he and his former co-host, Maurice DuBois, left CBS Evening News. The pair was replaced by former CBS Mornings co-anchor Tony Dokoupil, who was promoted to the position by new CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
The veteran reporter has appeared frequently on The Late Show over the years, but Tuesday’s show will mark his first since departing CBS. Colbert has always spoken highly of Dickerson, calling him “a journalist of sterling integrity” ahead of his final CBS Evening News appearance in December 2025.
Dickerson, like Colbert, has never been afraid to call out his CBS and Paramount bosses. Last July, while on air, he criticized Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump over a Kamala Harris 60 Minutes interview.
“The Paramount settlement poses a new obstacle: can you hold power to account after paying it millions? Can an audience trust you when it thinks you’ve traded away that trust? The audience will decide that,” Dickerson said, per The Daily Beast.
Dickerson’s upcoming Late Show appearance comes amid Colbert’s own battles with the network. Earlier this week, Colbert, who will air his final show in May, caused an uproar when he said CBS banned him from interviewing Texas Senate candidate James Talarico on The Late Show.
“Let’s call this what it is: Donald Trump‘s administration wants to silence anyone who says anything bad about Trump on TV because all Trump does is watch TV,” Colbert claimed on Tuesday’s (February 17) Late Show. The interview was instead uploaded to the show’s YouTube page, where it currently has over 8 million views.
CBS later denied Colbert’s claims, stating, “The show was provided legal guidance that the broadcast could trigger the FCC equal-time rule for two other candidates, including Rep. Jasmine Crockett, and presented options for how the equal time for other candidates could be fulfilled. The Late Show decided to present the interview through its YouTube channel with on-air promotion on the broadcast rather than potentially providing the equal-time options.”
Colbert fired back at his CBS bosses on Tuesday’s (February 17) show, saying, “Clearly, this statement was written by, and I’m guessing for, lawyers. They know damn well that every word of my script last night was approved by CBS lawyers who, for the record, approve every script that goes on the air.”
