Luckily, for one Jeopardy! contestant, their opponents both answered their Daily Doubles wrong, resulting in a runaway win for them. Did Tristan Williams win his fourth game, or was there another champion?
Williams, from Lincoln, Nebraska, had a three-day total of $61,199. He has already had two out of three runaway games. On May 11, the data scientist played against Steve Greene, from Cary, North Carolina, and Jessica Doverspike, from Brea, California. Warning: Spoilers for the May 11 episode of Jeopardy! ahead.
With two of the first six clues being Triple Stumpers, Williams answered the other four, giving him the lead. He maintained the lead with $3,200 throughout the first 15 clues. Greene, a college professor, and Doverspike, a marriage and family therapist, both had $1,400.
On clue 18, Williams found the Daily Double. He had $3,800 and wagered $2,500 in “Work Union.”
The clue read, “He made a few enemies during his service from 1957 to 1971, leading what was then America’s largest union.” “Who is Hoffa?” he answered correctly, giving him $6,300.
At the end of the round, Williams had the lead with $9,100. Greene had $4,000. Doverspike was in third place with $1,800.
Greene found the first Double Jeopardy DD on clue seven. He had $5,200 and wagered $3,000.
The clue in “Around The World” was “In South America, the Middle of the World Monument stands just north of this capital.” “What is Brasília?” he answered. The correct response was Quito. Greene dropped down to third place with $2,200.
Doverspike found the final DD on clue 13. She was in second place with $3,800 and wagered all of her money. In “A Song For You,” the clue read, “Brian May said John Deacon’s bass riff was the starting point for this collaboration with David Bowie.”
“I know it,” she said. “It’s not coming to me.”
The correct response was “Under Pressure.” Doverspike dropped to $0.
Williams dominated the round and had $19,100 by the end of the round. Greene was in second place with $5,400. Doverspike had $400.
The category for Final Jeopardy was “World History.” The clue read, “In 1454, the future Pope Pius II saw the work of this man at the Frankfurt Fair & marveled at the ‘extreme elegance & accuracy.'” The correct response was Johannes Gutenberg, which none of the game show contestants had.
Doverspike did not deliver an answer. She wagered all of her money, leaving her with $0. Greene answered, “Who is Holbein?” He wagered $3,000, ending him with $2,400.
Williams’ response was “Who is Raphael?” He wagered $4,100, giving him $15,000. This gave him a four-day total of $76,199. He will return on Tuesday to try to guarantee himself a spot in the Tournament of Champions.
