Hood River Valley’s Lars Welch and Trout Lake’s Rowan Shuman highlighted boys individual competition Friday and Saturday during Mt. Hood Ski League events on Mount Hood.
Skiers got in four slalom runs on Friday at Cooper Spur. Welch won the Feb. 23 morning session boys slalom race with the fastest runs of 26.10 seconds and 26.86 for a combined time of 52.96. Shuman was third in 55.51 and The Dalles’ Cooper Klindt was sixth in 1:01.91.
Hood River, bolstered by the 8-9 finish of Jess Aubert (1:02.84) and Ricardo Miller (1:04.09) won the team competition. HRV’s Jaden Johnson was 11th in 1:06.52.
The Eagle boys had the best team finishes in both Friday slalom runs, as well as the giant slalom on Saturday.
Welch also won the Feb. 23 afternoon session boys slalom race at Cooper Spur with the fastest runs of the day of 26.78 seconds and 28.46 for a combined total of 54.94. Shuman was second overall with runs of 28.25 and 28.94 (57.19). The Dalles’ Klindt was third in 1:01.93, and teammate Henry Perez was eighth (1:06.30). Perez had the ninth fastest run in the morning session but did not complete his second run.
A day later, Shuman’s runs of 32.77 and 30.76 were the fastest of each giant slalom run, as his combined total of 1:03.53 bested Welch’s 1:05.17.
The Dalles’ Perez was fourth (1:06.57), while Hood River had two other top-10 finishers in Johnson in seventh and Aubert in eighth. Johnson finished 10th on Friday for HRV in the afternoon slalom race at Cooper Spur.
In girls racing, Emily Teets continued her dominant season, leading HRV to a team win Friday morning. Teets and teammate Eliotte Walsh finished 1-2 in Friday’s morning slalom session. Teets won in 56.18 seconds, with individual runs of 27.99 and 28.19. Walsh was right behind in 28.74 and 29.30 for a combined total of 58.04. Teammate Zoe Mortensen was 10th (1:05.44).
The Dalles was led in the morning session by Kaiya Doty, who was ninth in 1:05.23, and Kailee Klindt, who was 14th in 1:09.37.
In the afternoon session, Teets continued her stellar skiing, with a three-second margin of victory with her combined two runs (28.29 and 29.11). Mortensen was third with runs of 30.52 and 32.70.
The Dalles was led in the afternoon by Klindt’s 10th place finish in 1:11.79.
Of note on Friday afternoon run was Walsh’s second run of 31.43, the third fastest of the second runs. She missed a gate in her first run and failed to get a combined time.
On Saturday in the giant slalom at Meadows, Teets won with runs of 34.06 and 31.05 (1:05.11). Mortensen was fourth (1:08.69) and Walsh sixth (1:10.26).
The Dalles girls were led by Doty, who finished 12th (1:14.61) and Klindt, who was 17th in 1:16.33. Teammate Abri Rincon completed the Riverhawks’ scoring with her 40th place finish in 1:29.66.
Trout Lake’s Ella Shuman was 12th on Saturday at Meadows. Shuman was 15th in the first run on Friday and 15th overall in the second run.
