HOOD RIVER — Summit silenced Hood River Valley’s (HRV’s) offense and strung together just enough hits of its own to eliminate the Eagles from the 2025 OSAA Class 5A state baseball playoffs in Bend.
HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) Eagles softball team was upset in the first round of the OSAA Class 5A state playoffs, losing 4-2 to …
Summit scored twice in the second inning and added an insurance run in the fifth in its 3-0 first-round win May 27. Hood River stranded six baserunners and had five hits against two Storm pitchers.
Coach Max Reitz’s Eagles finished the regular season 15-12 overall, 10-6 and in fourth place in the tough Northwest Oregon Conference. HRV had lost six straight games before finishing the regular season on a four-game winning streak leading up to the loss to Summit in the first round of the postseason.
The Eagles were led by two seniors, Addison Postlewait and Davis Parr, on an otherwise extremely young team. “We had great senior leadership this year from Davis Parr and Addison Postlewait and collectively this group really worked together well,” Reitz said.
Two of Summit’s senior leaders kept Hood River, seeded No. 12 in the final OSAA ranking, from sustaining any offensive threats — right-handed pitchers Alexander Via and Carter Hess. Via threw 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. Hess finished the game, giving up two hits, striking out four and walking one.
Hood River starting pitcher Bodie Stuben (four innings) and reliever Postlewait (two innings) were almost equally as sharp, allowing six hits between them. But the Eagle offense couldn’t break through against the Storm, which was 21-6 heading into a June 3 semifinal game against Wilsonville (29-0).
Hood River’s five hits came from Kingston McAdam and Maverick Hockett, both who were 2-for-3 — each with a double — and Postlewait, who added a single.
Hood River returned to the playoffs after missing out on the postseason in 2024. The Eagles were part of a competitive conference this past season which included Wilsonville, the state’s No. 1 team, Canby at No. 3, La Salle Prep at No. 6, and HRV at No. 12. Canby (24-5) faces Thurston in the other 5A semifinal this week.
Reitz said: “It was rewarding to watch our group work to get back into the playoffs after missing last year. They showed a lot of resilience. I’m proud of how they handled a challenging schedule and continued to compete.”
The coach is looking forward to next year when six seniors return. “It will be up to them to decide how they want their senior season to go, just as it is with every senior group,” Reitz said. “We should have the talent and expectations to improve on this year and to make a deep run in the OSAA playoffs in 2026. But it will take even more collective work if we want to do that and compete with the high-end programs in the state.”
