HOOD RIVER — The Hood River Valley (HRV) Eagles softball team was upset in the first round of the OSAA Class 5A state playoffs, losing 4-2 to Eagle Point.
No. 6-seeded HRV (21-6 overall,13-3 Northwest Oregon Conference) hosted the No. 11 Eagle Point Eagles (16-12 overall) of the Midwestern League on May 27. Eagle Point never trailed in the contest. Junior Brylee Leonardo pitched a complete game and allowed just two Hood River runs on three hits. She recorded eight strikeouts. Leonardo wasn’t overpowering, but she moved the ball around in the strike zone and did a good job adjusting the speed of her pitches.
The playoff game marked the final career games for HRV seniors Sarah Mason and Grace Rowan. Planning to attend Division 1 University of Massachusetts-Lowell next year, Rowan also pitched a complete game but allowed four runs on six hits. She recorded a game-high 13 strikeouts. First baseman Bella Belcher went 1-for-2 with one single, one run and a walk. Shortstop Kenadie Lucas (1-for-3, single, one strikeout) and centerfielder Honey Wampler-Bryan (1-for-3, single) were the other Hood River Eagles who recorded hits.
Eagle Point took a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning and Hood River responded with two scores with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Remaining aggressive, Belcher stole third base and Mason took second. The two scored on throw that ended up in the outfield.
Eagle Point lost to No. 3 Crater, 2-1, in the 5A quarterfinals.
