Hood River Valley’s girls track and field team, sparked by a win in the distance medley relay, finished ninth in the April 13 Wilsonville Invitational track and field meet.
The day-long, multi-team, multi-enrollment level meet gave the Eagles a chance to test their skills against a deep field. It was a “race to the restaurants” entry focus for Coach Brandon Bertram’s squad, which didn’t enter any events after the 200 meters in order to… well… order.
The meals were earned, especially by the HRV medley team of Hazel Haspela, Syl Perrin, Sadie Baumann and Katie Godkin. They beat eight other teams, running 13 minutes, 41.6 seconds. Perrin also ran an open 1500 meters, finishing 11th and recording a personal best of 5:10.71. Haspela ran a season best of 5:39.13 in the same race, and Baumann ran a 2:41.28 800.
Hood River scored 32 team points, including 14 from sprinter/hurdler Simone Tillman, who was second in the 200 meters in 25.81 and third in the 100 hurdles in a personal record 15.63. Tillman also ran a leg on HRV’s fifth-place, 4x100 relay along with Alex Bronson, Sutton LeFevre and Caroline Greenleaf (51.75), finishing 11th and recording a personal best of 5:10.71.
Also scoring team points for the Eagles was Sylvanine Farr, who cleared 9 feet, 6 inches, good enough for fifth in the pole vault.
On the boys side, there were no wins for HRV, but plenty of personal bests. The top HRV field placing came from pole vaulter Francisco Solberg, who cleared 12 feet and was fifth. Teammate Micah Castro topped a PR 11-6 for eighth for Coach Shawn Meyle’s vaulters. Castro added a PR 19-4 long jump to his resume. Also in the vertical jumps, frosh Wyeth Droege cleared 5-8 for eighth in the high jump and also ran a PR 18.88 110 hurdle heat.
Best on the track for HRV was middle distance specialist Jackson Bullock. The senior was third in the 800 in 2:00.16. Distance teammate Sam Knoll added two PRs — a 4:31.35, 1500 and a 2:12.25, 800. Kai Wagner ran a PR 4:19.78 in the 1500 and then added a PR 57.62 open 400 for some speed work. Junior Logan King completed the distance crew’s marks with his season best 4:23.33 1500.
In the sprints, HRV was 3-for-4 in PRs with the fourth mark a season best. Senior Chaz Rockett had a double PR day: 11.57 100 and 23.51 200. Junior Toby Stintzi clocked a 24.63 200 PR, and teammate Levi Grimsley had a season best 12-second 100.
