HOOD RIVER — A Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) championship is not out of the question for the Hood River Valley softball team, but everything has to go their way in the coming weeks.
The Eagles have established themselves as one of the best offensive teams in the state. They’ve scored 244 runs, which is tied for second among Class 5A teams. As of May 19, the Eagles (10-3 NWOC, 18-5 overall) are ranked No. 6 in Class 5A, one spot behind the Canby Cougars (12-1, 17-6) in the league standings.
Three games remain on both teams’ schedules with Hood River traveling to Hillsboro (9-4, 12-10) on May 20 and Centennial (3-11, 6-15) the following day. The Eagles will host Centennial for senior night on May 23 at 5 p.m.
Canby will wrap up its two-game series versus the Milwaukie Mustangs on May 20 and match up against the Wilsonville Wildcats on May 22 and 23. Canby, Hood River and Wilsonville are mathematically still in contention to win the NWOC title.
Last week, HRV won three games — including two against Wilsonville. On May 13, the Eagles were propelled to victory by the batting of Kenadie Lucas. She went 3-for-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. HRV scored four runs in the second inning and senior pitcher Grace Rowan limited the Wildcats to four hits. Rowan faced 34 batters and struck out 13. Isa Rivera was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a double.
In a closer matchup on May 14, the Eagles scored two runs in the top of their eighth inning to win 3-2 for their seventh road win of the season. Lucas again had a team-high three hits (3-for-4) and earned the win on the mound. She struck out seven and allowed two hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Rowan pitched the final 1 2/3 innings of relief.
On May 15, the Eagles dismantled the visiting Hillsboro Spartans, 15-2, in four and a half innings. They exploded for seven runs in the third inning and another six in the fourth. Senior Sarah Mason went 1-for-2 at the plate with two RBI. The Eagles are 11-1 on their home field. Rivera and Bella Belcher both went 2-for-4. Reagan Mooney earned two walks and stole a base.
