HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley competed against many of the top wrestling teams in the state at the annual Oregon Classic HS Boys Duals Jan. 17-18 in Redmond.
Hood River took 16 wrestlers and finished fifth (3-3 dual match record) in the Classic Cup bracket at the 81-team Oregon Classic at the Deschutes Country Fair & Expo Center.
The tourney featured pool dual matches on Friday — HRV had three dual meets. The Eagles lost 42-39 to Bend, lost 40-36 against Dallas, and beat Ashland, 65-18. HRV was leading Bend, 39-18, but lost the final four matches against the Lava Bears.
The third-place record placed HRV in the Classic Cup bracket on Saturday, when the Eagles competed against North Eugene, losing 44-36, before beating Centennial, 48-33, and then Ridgeview, 43-23, in the match for fifth place.
Among individual highlights, Hood River’s 285-pounder, Omar Sedano-Perales, wrestled to five straight wins after losing his opening match in the dual versus Bend’s Lukas Quade.
Sedano Perales won by fall over Donovan Witt of Dallas, added another win by fall in the dual versus Ashland (over another state meet grappler), and then won his first two bracket matches versus North Eugene in the quarterfinals and Centennial in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match versus Ridgeview, Sedano-Perales pinned Quentin Sleeth of Ridgeview.
Hood River’s Drew Lukas and Connor Farlow each won three wrestled matches in the three-match pool action on Friday. Lukas, at 113 pounds, had a win over Nathan Ramirez of Dallas High; Ramirez won three matches at the 2024 5A state tourney. Among Farlow’s three wins at 120 pounds — all by first-round pins — was a win by fall over 2024 state meet wrestler Joseph Maxfield of Dallas.
Froylan (Jr.) Mendez also won four matches over the two-day Classic for HRV. Mendez was three-for-three in Saturday’s bracket matches — all by fall. He beat 2024 state-meet wrestler Michael Stockton of Centennial in the consolation semifinals. He also had a win by pin in Friday’s pool competition over Jimmy Stewart of Ashland at 144 pounds. Stockton also competed at the 5A state tourney a year ago.
Hood River’s Owen Waits won his two wrestled matches in the pool action at 165 pounds, and teammate Leyton Adams won two bracket matches at 138. Crater won the 5A Championship bracket.
