Hood River Valley finished fourth in its pool of six teams on the first day of the Jan. 17-18 Oregon Classic High School Girls Duals and then ended up sixth in bracket wrestling on the second day of the wrestling tourney in Central Oregon.
The Eagles won three of eight duals – 52-30 over 4A North Marion, 48-24 over 5A Bend in pool matches, and then 54-24 over 6A North Medford in the consolation semifinals. McKay High of Salem edged HRV in the fifth-place match, which was decided on a tiebreaker. The teams wrestled to a 42-42 draw and McKay earned the better placing based on an 8-0 advantage in near-fall points.
Hood River mixed and matched its lineup throughout the two-day, 24-team event at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond. The following HRV wrestlers had at least one win in wrestled matches in the tourney: Christeen Dehart, Karely Bolanos Romero, and Natalie Solorio.
Charley Beam had two wins, including a win by fall in the fifth-place match against McKay. Xiomara Gordian Gomez, Valeria Solorio Campos, and Ayleen Marquez won three matches over the two days.
Kyra Mitchell led the Eagles in wins at the Classic with five. She won at 130 pounds with a pin in 37 seconds in the fifth-place match; won in the consolation semifinal by fall; won in the fourth round of pool matches against Bend by fall; and also won in the first and second rounds in pool action.
One of Mitchell’s two losses came in the Eagles’ third match in pool play – a 79-0 defeat to 5A girls wrestling power Dallas. The Dragons were second in the 2024 6A/5A state tournament. Mitchell also lost by fall to Bella Rico of Sweet Home in the quarterfinals of bracket matches.
