HOOD RIVER — Hood River Valley used a third-quarter scoring burst to take control of its final non-league girls basketball game on Jan. 3, and the result was a 42-28 win at Portland’s Franklin.
Julia Rowan’s driving basket midway through the third period gave Hood River (6-4) the lead for good, 18-16. Addi Van Metre added a corner 3-pointer and the margin was 21-16. A couple of possessions later, Emily Doss felt a double team in the key and dished to the corner to an open Rowan who buried a 3-pointer of her own for a 24-18 Eagle advantage.
Van Metre hit another 3-pointer for a 27-20 HRV lead, and Rowan added a transition basket off a feed from Isa Rivera, and Franklin called a timeout with 1:36 left in the period and trailing, 29-20.
The game was the first for Hood River in 10 days and that contributed, in part, to the low-scoring first half. Hood River shot just two for eight in the second quarter, but the Eagles were able to stay in the game partially because of their defense.
The Eagles trailed 10-9 after one quarter and 16-15 at halftime. Franklin has a young team with six freshmen on its nine-player varsity roster.
In the third period, HRV traded 3-pointers for Franklin’s 2-pointers and was able to pull away from the host team. Rowan finished with 14 points and Bella Howe added 12.
Hood River was scheduled to begin Northwest Oregon Conference play Monday, Jan. 6 against visiting Wilsonville. HRV then plays four straight road games, including two this week: Wednesday, Jan. 8 at Hillsboro; and Friday, Jan. 10 at La Salle Prep.
