WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins won two straight WIAA Class 1A Trico League boys basketball games last week and they have momentum after winning three of their past four contests.
The Bruins finished the week in a three-way tie for fifth place in the Trico.
The Bruins (4-6 league, 9-6 overall) recorded a come-from-behind, 70-58, victory at home Jan. 22 over the Kalama High Chinooks (4-7 league, 8-8 overall). The Bruins fell behind 14-4 in the first quarter, but then came back, trimming the deficit to 16-12 at the conclusion of the quarter.
Early in the second, junior Hunter Wang sank a jumper from the corner to help the Bruins take their first lead of the game at 17-16 and they never trailed again. The Bruins extended their advantage to 20-16 when junior Hector Orozco fired in a three-point field goal, forcing a Chinooks timeout. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter and the Bruins led 29-25 at halftime.
The Bruins notched a second straight win on the road, 71-57, over the La Center High Wildcats (5-5 league, 9-7 overall) on Jan. 24.
The Bruins will be seeking to extend their win streak in a 7 p.m. road game Jan. 28 versus the league leading Seton Catholic High Cougars (9-0 league, 10-5 overall) in Vancouver. The Bruins follow with a 7 p.m. contest Friday against the Fort Vancouver High Trappers (8-2 league, 13-3 overall) at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
