HOOD RIVER — The Oregon Department of Education (ODE), in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, has honored Anne Edwards as one of Oregon’s 17 Regional Teachers of the Year for 2026- 27. Edwards teaches seventh grade social studies and Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) at Wy’east Middle School.
Edwards was celebrated during a surprise classroom event at the Wy’east Middle School Performing Arts Center Sept. 24.
“Anne Edwards embodies the very best of Hood River School District,” said Hood River County School District (HRCSD) Superintendent Bill Newton. “Her dedication to her students, her high-energy instruction, and her ability to build strong connections make her an exceptional educator. We are proud to see her recognized as a Regional Teacher of the Year.”
The Oregon Teacher of the Year Program recognizes and honors teacher excellence, with the state Teacher of the Year serving as the face and voice of exemplary educators across Oregon. Edwards was originally nominated by one of her students, who noted, “She set up a calm learning space that is amazing for growth.”
“Ms. Edwards brings so much energy to class every day,” shared one student. “She reads out loud to us regularly, which makes story time and history come alive. She always tells us funny stories about her life and her grandkids, and then she connects those stories right back to what we are learning. She’s super nice, really supportive, and makes learning so much fun.”
“My philosophy of education is rooted in the belief that students must feel the human connection to understand its significance,” Edwards noted in her nomination. “While I’m honored to be considered for Teacher of the Year, my reward is in the knowledge that I have created an environment that enabled students to reach their potential. I’m proud to be part of a legacy of teachers and learners who also believe that empathy is needed in the world today.”
Students, colleagues, administrators, friends, or family members nominated Regional Teachers of the Year. Regional winners were identified through a local nomination, application, and selection process facilitated by the 19 Education Service Districts around the state. Applicants submitted testimonials and letters of support, and a diverse panel of regional representatives assessed them on leadership, instructional expertise, commitment to equity, community involvement, understanding of educational issues, vision, and professional development.
Thanks to a partnership with the Oregon Lottery, each Regional Teacher of the Year received a $1,000 award and is considered a semi-finalist for the 2026-27 Oregon Teacher of the Year, which will be announced later this fall.
The full list of statewide Regional Teachers of the Year winners is available on the Oregon Teacher of the Year website.
