THE GORGE — The defending Big Sky League boys basketball champion Dufur High Rangers got off to a great start to the season as they won their first three nonleague contests last week in a tournament at Pilot Rock High School, Dec. 12-14.
The Rangers (3-0) began with a season opening 50-42 win over the New Hope Christian High Warriors (2-3). The Rangers jumped out to a 12-5 first quarter advantage and never trailed. Jacob Brown scored 11 points and Kordell White added 10 to lead Dufur.
The Rangers then had another close, similar type of contest in their next matchup on Dec. 13 versus the Elgin High Huskies (3-2). The Rangers jumped in front 13-4 after the opening quarter and led all the way for a 42-34 victory. Nolan Cates scored 11 points and Brown had 13 for the Rangers.
The Rangers then notched a third consecutive win 42-40 over the Echo High Cougars (4-2) on Dec. 14.
The South Wasco County High Redsides (3-1) notched a third straight nonleague victory with a 51-16 home win Dec. 13 over the Falls City/Kings Valley Charter High Mountaineers (0-5). The Redsides followed the next day with their first defeat of the season in a 54-50 home loss to the Cove High Leopards (4-2).
The Klickitat/Glenwood High Vandals enjoyed success last week in winning two-out-of-three nonleague contests. Klickwood (3-2) lost 47-37 to the Columbia High Bruins junior varsity squad Dec. 12 in White Salmon. The Vandals then bounced back and won two straight; the Vandals won 48-44 over the Vernonia High Loggers (2-4) in the Condon Christmas Tournament Dec. 13-14 at Condon High School. The Vandals followed with a 50-41 win Saturday over the Griswold High Grizzlies (3-3).
The Sherman Huskies (2-2) played just one game last week, losing 52-45 to the North Clackamas Christian High Saints (3-2) Dec. 10 in Oregon City.
The Lyle/Wishram High Cougars (2-2) won one of three games last week. The Cougars won 58-30 over the C.S. Lewis Academy Watchmen (1-2) Dec. 10 in Newberg. The Cougars then competed in Condon Christmas Tournament Dec. 13-14 at Condon High School. The Cougars lost 52-26 to the Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler High Falcons (3-2) Dec. 13, followed by a 71-62 loss to the Condon High Blue Devils (3-2) on Saturday.
The Horizon Christian High Hawks (0-4) and the Trout Lake High Mustangs (0-6) both struggled last week while losing nonleague games. The Hawks’ best showing came Dec. 11 at WIAA Class 1A Stevenson, where they fought back from a double-digit deficit only to lose, 53-51. Sophomore guard Tyler Abbott scored 17 fourth-quarter points to lead the Hawks’ comeback.
1A Girls Basketball
Despite losing their first game of the season, the Trout Lake High Mustangs continue to be the top local team in OSAA Class 1A girls basketball as the Mustangs won three-of-four nonleague contests.
The Mustangs started out with 65-49 home win Dec. 10 over the St. Paul Buckaroos (0-5), followed by a 43-16 road win Dec. 12 over the Pilot Rock High Rockets (2-3). The Mustangs (5-1) won 38-34 over the Echo High Cougars (5-1) Dec. 13 at Nixyaawii High School for their fifth consecutive victory. Their win streak was snapped the next day in a 48-31 loss to the Union High Bobcats (5-1) at Pilot Rock High School.
The South Wasco County High Redsides notched a third straight victory 58-39 over the Falls City/Kings Valley Charter Mountaineers (1-3) Dec. 13 at home to keep pace with the Mustangs in the early season standings. The Redsides then had their win streak snapped Dec. 14 in a 49-46 loss to the Southwest Christian High Wildcats (4-2) in Maupin.
The Sherman High Huskies (2-2) lost 66-23 to North Clackamas Dec. 10 in Oregon City. The Dufur High Rangers and the Horizon Christian High Hawks lost all three of their nonleague games last week and both squads will be seeking to get their first win this week.
