FROM THE pre 4th of July visit to the home of Don and Betty Graves. “Don passed just a short time after this photo was taken. Their home was so very welcoming. It didn't matter what they were doing or how many us were in the group, The Graves' always made time for YoHOHs and really cherished our visits.,” said Jayne Mederios. The Youth of Heart of Hospice/YoHOHs tried something new this summer, writes Volunteer Coordinator Jayne Mederios.
The group decided to continue their patient outings during the summer break.
They planned two festive outings, a pre 4th of July visit and a traveling Luau in August.
The YoHOH traveling Luau was complete with pineapple juice, leis, and fresh local peaches donated by Mark & Terri Beam. Singing songs, bringing little gifts and giving hugs and handshakes all help brighten up patient's day.
One of our first Hood River visits was to Heart of Hospice patient Peggy Briggs. Peggy is a retired teacher who resides at Parkhurst House. She is full of life and loves to laugh. She welcomes the YoHOH's right in to her apartment as if they were her grandchildren. No one leaves Peggy's room without a smile and a hug.
Medierios writes, “As we left Peggy's room, a few of her neighbors heard us singing and came out to join us as we walked down the hall. We didn't have a sheet with lyrics that day, so another resident carried on with the next verse that we didn't know! It looked like a well-orchestrated TV commercial, the timing and the spontaneous fun we all had with our patients and residents.
“Thank you to everyone who participated in these summer events.”
