Yesteryears: Crag Rats make vinegar plant run in 1926

Nov. 19, 1986 — The City of Hood River’s fire department is packing its bags to set up shop in its new fire station this week. This new station, a nine-bay, 10,145 square foot facility located on 18th Street behind the municipal swimming pool, will house the entire fire department beginning Friday. Radio base stations were moved to the new site Monday and Tuesday, according to Bob Palmer, fire administrative officer. By Wednesday morning, the 911 system is expected to be installed. Also Wednesday, personnel and fire equipment were moved to the site. The only thing residents may notice as being amiss will be the city’s sirens. Because of the move, they will not sound until Friday, Palmer expects. He cautions, however, fire dispatch will be fully operational during the entire relocation project. A dedication of the new station will be held mid-December.

November 23 will be Post Card Day. Every man, woman and child is asked to mail on that day as many cards as one sees fit to friends in the East, writing something in this vein: “If you have not planned your next vacation, arrange to spend it in the Pacific Northwest, where nature smiles all year round. We have the biggest out-of-doors on the continent.”
