Prompt action by the Chamber of Commerce and the State Editorial Association this week resulted in news being received here from Representative Sinnott that while a policy of slowing up on forest road work is contemplated, there is little danger that work on the Loop Highway and Cooper’s Spur lateral may entirely cease, as feared here when news of the proposed curtailment of the road fund was received here. — Hood River News
Fred L. Gifford, grand dragon of the Ku Klux Klan in the state of Oregon, and other prominent speakers of that organization, will appear in the klan lodge rooms tonight, according to an announcement. The meeting will be open to klansmen and klanswomen only.
Fifty acres of potatoes from the district near Friend are sought by the officials of The Dalles Cooperative Growers Association.
The second entry in the annual “big egg” contest was made today, with the exhibition of a White Leghorn egg by Mrs. H. McCullough, of 615 East Second street. All Are Urged To Report Fires: During the month of April, all drivers of stages, freight trucks, milk trucks and other vehicles that travel regularly over the Columbia River highway through the Columbia River Gorge are to be contacted and given a copy of the following letter, according to District Ranger Albert Wiesendanger: “Since you travel almost every day over the Columbia River Highway between Crown Point and Hood River, it would be appreciated if you will promptly report any fire you may happen to see burning in the grass, brush or timber along the railroad right of way or above the highway …” — Hood River News
A five acre tract of land located immediately east of The Dalles, and owned by Mrs. Edward Seufert, has been purchased by Post 2471 of the Veterans of Foreign Affairs, it was announced today by Mrs. Seufert.
Included in the transaction were the Old Cellar, the Old Mill, two cabins, a foundry and the smelter.
The Old Mill, according to the report, will be used by the veterans as a recreation center for members and returning veterans. The entire building will be remodeled. The top floor will be used as a dance hall and the ground floor will be converted into large recreation rooms. — The Dalles Chronicle
LYLE — The Jarvis Brothers, of Rowena, Oregon, have sold their ferryboat to the government. This ferry operated between Lyle and Rowena until the brothers went into the service. Future ferry service at Lyle is indefinite. — White Salmon Enterprise

A new $175,000 link between Parkdale and Highway 35 will be ready for bids on April 21, according to County Surveyor George Frey. Right of way for the 2.29 mile stretch of new road, with the exception of three properties, has been acquired. If the three remaining property owners fail to sign an agreement, condemnation proceedings will be filed, Frey said. The new road will extend Baseline road east of Parkdale to a junction with the state highway. — Hood River News
The preliminary general fund budget of School District 12, The Dalles, for the coming year dropped below $1,600,000 Thursday night.
A rivulet flowed down Union Street at mid-afternoon Thursday after a break occurred in the 12-inch cast iron water transmission line that runs from the city hall well to the 14th Street reservoir. Excavation work on a new city off-street parking facility at Front and State streets is expected to begin next week. City council members cleared the way for the work Monday when they approved a low bid for the project. Council members weren’t so quick to award a swimming pool boiler replacement contract, however. Following City Engineer Pete Harris’ recommendation, the council opted to hold the bids on the boiler replacement until sufficient funds are found to pay off a new boiler. — Hood River News
The legal owner of the Antelope Community Church will be determined in a trial that begins Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Circuit Court for Wasco County. The city of Antelope and the Episcopal Diocese of Eastern Oregon both claim ownership of the building.
A group of women who are conducting a cross-country walk for peace and disarmament will be in The Dalles on Saturday where a series of events is being planned by a local peace group.
