WELL SAID: “It’s not what you don’t know that kills you, it’s what you know for sure that ain’t true.” — Mark Twain
SEEN AND HEARD: Neon cardboard sign stapled, illegally, to a Heights street sign post, advertising a yard sale — in Odell … on the steepest Seventh Street sidewalk, girl in heels nearly falling forward onto concrete as her eager puppy on a leash strains to greet another pedestrian … in 90-degree weather, a man sitting on the bench in that off-limits patio in front of the library.
WELL DONE: The fence around “Stone-iferous Cone” on the Georgiana Smith Gardens grounds, next to the Hood River Library. The 10-year-old sculpture has seen some tampering over time, and while it was constructed to be avoid falling when a stone or two was removed, it’s a welcome measure of safety — to protect the sculpture and to prevent little climbers.
The library has also installed additional metal fencing along the north walkway, and cleaned out the grungy foliage on the north side of the building.
Meanwhile, the yellow “caution” tape around the maple on State Street will be up for a while, until an arborist can trim some potentially-troublesome branches overhanging the popular front patio. New Library Director Rachael Fox said the tree has some rot within, but it will be saved.
FLAG OF THE WEEK: The skull-and-crossbones on the play equipment at Bright Beginnings Preschool on State Street (photo at left).
GATHERING PLACES: Two elderly ladies were looking around and doing the “are-we-lost?” pivot on a Cascade Avenue corner, and asked, “Where is the red pizza building on a corner?” When told, one said, “We weren’t given very good directions for where to meet.”
