For the last several years, the Parkdale Grange ladies have been baking up more than just blueberry muffins on Veteran’s Day.
Included in the special muffins are thanks, gratitude and a way to honor for those who have served our country.
“We started this five years ago, mainly because we have several in our group that have parents at the Oregon Veteran’s Home in The Dalles,” said Grange member Joanne Ehl. “We started talking about food, I had a lot of blueberries and suggested we make blueberry muffins for the veterans. Now the muffins are part of their tradition and they really look forward to getting them on Veteran’s Day.”
The ladies will be baking 20 batches of 500 mini-muffins on Tuesday, Nov. 11, starting at 9 a.m. at the Parkdale Grange Hall and anyone in the community who would like to help is invited and encouraged to bring extra mini muffin pans.
“While we make the muffins, we put on a big pot of ‘stone soup’ with a chicken broth base for lunch,” said Ehl. “Everyone is invited to bring an ingredient or two to add to the pot, except pasta.”
In addition to the muffins, Columbia Gorge Fruit Growers donates a couple cases of pears so the vets can enjoy fresh fruit with their muffins.
Once the muffins are done, some of the Grange members deliver the freshly-baked treats and the pears to the Oregon Veteran’s Home in The Dalles.
The Grange ladies say the smiles on the faces of the vets enjoying their muffins is the best part of the day.
