THE GORGE — The Hood River area’s local youth ultimate frisbee league, Gorge Ultimate Frisbee Academy (GUFA), concluded its second season at the end of May after eight weeks of skills development, team building and friendly competition.
The springtime league, open to youth in fourth through ninth grades, is supported by Hood River Valley Parks and Recreation District and is led by volunteers from Gorge Ultimate (GU), the area’s local mixed-gender, all-levels ultimate frisbee community.
GU’s youth league aims to offer elementary, middle and high schoolers in the Gorge a fun, supportive introduction to this high-energy, high-spirited sport. Each week of this past season provided an opportunity for players to develop their athletic skills, build teamwork, and practice sportsmanship through ultimate frisbee’s mantra of “Spirit of the Game.” From newcomers to the sport and those who have played frisbee in the past, every player showed massive improvement over the course of the season, which concluded with a tournament.
“I’ve always experienced ultimate frisbee and its community of athletes/participants as powerful change agents in my own life, and that has been one of the motivators for me to share the goodness of this sport,” GU organizer Rheggie Carranza said. “As one of the head coaches of Gorge Ultimate Frisbee Academy, it was very life-affirming, humbling, and a wonderful experience to witness our youth come to their own recognition that they can participate in their growth in technical skills and human development — social emotional learning. There’s ample opportunities and in so many different directions a whole person can grow through this amazing sport, and to witness our youth realize their own power to influence their peers for good, is always a win in my book! I look forward to many more seasons coaching for GUFA and reinforcing a safe space for our youth to learn about themselves and enjoy this sport with others.”
As the youth league wraps up, GU is looking forward to its next opportunity: Adult summer ultimate frisbee league. The league runs on Thursday evenings at White Salmon High School, starting June 20 and running until Aug. 22. Summer league is open to players of all experience levels and is a great way to stay active, meet new people, and enjoy the beautiful summer weather in the Gorge.
