HOOD RIVER — Hood River New School seventh graders spent an afternoon working with Publisher Chelsea Marr on how to submit a press release and how to format an ad in the Columbia Gorge News. They are actively working on taking out an ad to support their community service project that focuses on collecting donations of kid-sized bikes from the community and delivering them to those in need through Anson’s Bike Buddies.
“The students really benefited from the opportunity to work with Chelsea Marr, to not only understand how newspapers function but to visualize a draft of their bike drive ad,” teacher Dov Rohan said. “They felt empowered to learn how to submit a press release to the paper and can’t wait to utilize this skill in the near future for relevant school activities and adventures.”
Students throughout the communities are encouraged to read the local newspaper as an added learning tool. The newspaper works as a living or real-world textbook with current news and events about where students live. The Newspapers in Education program began in 1957 and is a way for teachers to receive newspapers in their classrooms during the year, often at a reduced rate or at no charge. The program found increased reading and test scores for students reading newspapers. Columbia Gorge News offers newspapers for classrooms throughout our communities for all students.
“It was super interactive and fun,” Hood River New School student Charlie Jones said of the program. “We learned a lot about the newspaper and had a blast developing our bike donation ad.”
