Last week’s History Mystery, above, shows the closure of The Dalles Dam on March 10, 1957. It appears to show the last trickle of flowing water, perhaps taken from the downstream side. This roll only showed one side of the story that day — large machinery, workers, this small stream of water — and not the rise of Lake Celilo itself, Celilo Falls, or the people who came to watch.

This week’s photo, above, a color image of an infrastructure fire taken in The Dalles on May 16, 1999, was taken donated by The Dalles Chronicle to Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum, where it is now item 2022.36.09 in the collections.
