Last week’s History Mystery showed a machine used in excavation of The Dalles-Celilo Canal. It also shows seven men standing next to railroad tracks. “Benson & Co.” shows on the side of the excavator.

Construction of the canal lasted from 1905 through 1915, and it was over eight miles long, built to provide river navigation past the rapids and past Celilo Falls. The canal was dedicated in May 1915.
