Last week’s photo, donated to Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum is number 2022.03.015 in the collections. Taken August 4, 1959, it shows a collection of machinery on W. Second, The Dalles.
It shows signs celebrating “stout hearted Oregonians” building roads with increasingly sophisticated technology. Nothing more was learned. Did anyone build a road they’d like to tell us about?
The photo above is one of two prints obtained by Red Wagon Antiques proprietor Gary Miller recently from a Condon resident. “Markham photos, The Dalles” is in the corner of the frame. Business signs include Levi Strauss Overalls, Schlesser Brother’s Meat Quality, McCoy Motor Co., Glenwood Hotel, Todd’s Bakery, Red and White Store and Hampton Furniture Co.
