Familiar faces at new school

In addition, the board has also appointed the Rev. Jesse Jacobsen as interim principal. Jacobsen has served as pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church, where CLS is located at 2323 East 12th Street, The Dalles, since 2006. Working with Radliff, he has finalized curriculum choices that blend resources donated by Covenant Christian with components best suited to CLS’s “classical model” of education.

This model includes all of the usual subjects one encounters in an elementary school, but follows a three-stage sequence called the Trivium. This sequence recognizes three natural stages of learning in students and taps into those stages to help children to learn.

For example, young children in the first stage, sometimes called the grammar stage, love to memorize and can do it without even realizing they are doing it. The early grades use this natural learning to teach the foundation of subjects, such as facts and dates.

During its first year of operation, the school will serve kindergarten through fourth grade students, with additional grades planned for future years. Families can attend upcoming open houses, held on three consecutive Thursdays, Aug. 7, 14 and 21,

from 4 to 8 p.m. The events will allow families to learn more, tour the school facilities, ask questions, and enroll. Appointments are also available.
