Street party at Double Mtn.
The Oregon Trail Rally will be in Hood River on May 4 (see sports section for details) and a Double Mountain Brewery (8 Fourth St.) block party is planned at 7 p.m. An outdoor beer garden, food and the Portland’s Jackalope Saints will be on stage.
“The Jackalope Saints play string-band music rooted in folk and bluegrass traditions, it’s the howling sound of wind in the trees, cowboys at a fire and Jackalopes echoing back on a warm desert night.”
Asian Dance recital May 5
In celebration of hatsume and the Year of the Snake, performer and instructor Nefertiti, from Etnia Fusion, will be performing on Sunday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Columbia Center for the Arts her signature Asian Fusion works, the elegant “Fan Dance” with local dance students. Inspired by Japanese Odori, Goju Ryu martial arts and folk dances from the Far East, the dances promise to show the beauty of Oriental culture.
Meet ‘100 Hikes’ author
Join “100 Hikes in NW Oregon and SW Washington” guidebook author William Sullivan on a 4-mile hike to a wildflower meadow on Friday, May 3, from 9 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Meet at 9 a.m. at the Waucoma Bookstore, 212 Oak St., Hood River. Register through Community Ed at their website (class A9085), cost is $23 and includes a guidebook.
Sullivan will be at Waucoma Bookstore from 5-8 p.m. on May 3. Sullivan's latest novel is “The Case of D.B. Cooper's Parachute,” winner of the 2012 Book Buzz Award. The book signing is free and open to the public.
Shoe contest, ‘Kinky Boots’ at Columbia Center for the Arts
Join the Columbia Center for the Arts on Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m., for a shoe contest and showing of the hilarious film “Kinky Boots.” The film will be preceded by a brief interactive conversation with a few fascinating artists, including Nike career shoe designer, Mike “The Innovator” Friton, Damon Klegg, local shoe designer for Adidas, Timberland and NorthFace and creative metal sculptor Micki Voohries. VOCI choral concert May 12-13
The Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association presents the VOCI Community Chamber Choir and the Interludes Vocal Ensemble in two concerts, Sunday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at Hood River Valley High School auditorium and at St. Peter's Landmark Church in The Dalles, Monday, May 13, at 7 p.m.
Organizers say “this will be an uplifting evening of choral music from four centuries, from madrigals to jazz. Falling on Mother's Day weekend, this is a great opportunity to enjoy an evening out with Mom and the St. Peter's Landmark Church offers excellent acoustics for a fine vocal ensemble experience.”
FISH benefit May 4 at The Pines
A FISH Food Bank fundraiser is set for Saturday, May 4, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at The Pines Tasting Room in Hood River. There will be raffle prizes, auction items and entertainment provided by Aurora from the Hood River High School and music for dancing by Swing Crew and friends. Suggested donation is $10. Tickets can be purchased at Waucoma Bookstore or at the door. Proceeds from the benefit will be used for the food bank building fund.
Flamenco dance at Gallery 301

Adopt-A-Dog’s sale May 11
The Going to the Dogs Rummage Sale, a fundraiser for Hood River Adopt-A-Dog, will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 9-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, from 12-4 p.m. at the Cody Fruit Stand, 3475 Graves Drive in Odell. Sunday is half price day for pet “moms.”
Donations are being accepted now — please call 541-354-1083 and leave a message to arrange pick up or drop the items in the donation box at the Hukari Shelter at 3910 Heron Drive in Odell before May 4.

Hood River Adopt-A-Dog is the volunteer group that provides care for all shelter dogs and veterinary care and adoption services for unclaimed dogs at Hood River County’s Hukari Shelter in Odell.
Adopt-A-Dog receives no funds from the county for services provided, operating solely on donations, adoption fees, and funds raised from events like this.
