THE DALLES — Last month, a film festival hosted by the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum raised money for their Snow School program. Offered through the Winter Wildlands Alliance, a series of short films about winter sports hyped viewers up for the coming snow season.
Film topics were inspiring, ranging from ice skating to dog sledding, endurance races to avalanches, and more. A raffle with donated prizes and drink sales brought in most of the funding for the center’s Snow School. There was also a taco truck and games like badminton and cornhole to entertain guests.
Director of Education Danny Cosgrove was pleased with the event’s successful turnout. “The support and sense of celebration in the room were inspiring and has us all very excited for the winter ahead,” he said.

This is the second year for Snow School which teaches students about winter ecology and snow science. Students get to explore the outdoors with snowshoes and other equipment provided by the Discovery Center. Funds raised during the Backcountry Film Festival ensure students with financial barriers are able to participate in the program.
Program Director Britney Gitch thanked everyone for participating, certain that the funds will help the Discovery Center expand their snow program to more schools and students. “I’m overwhelmingly grateful to everyone who attended the event and donated to the raffle … We can’t wait to put on our snowshoes and dive into animal adaptations, snow science, and more.” said Gitch.
