THE GORGE — Memorial Day ceremonies are planned throughout the Gorge on Monday, May 26, as follows:
White Salmon American Legion Post 87 and Carson Legion Post 137 will sponsor the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the White Salmon Cemetery at 1 p.m. The patriotic event will honor the sacrifices and service of passed local veterans, said a press release.
Approximately a dozen deceased veterans will be inducted into the “Walk of Honor,” each with a personalized bronze plaque permanently installed. The event will include a flag ceremony, guest speaker, and a possible flyover of vintage military aircraft from Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum (WAAAM) in Hood River. Organizers say there will be plenty of parking and chairs available. All are welcome.
Hood River American Legion Post 22 honors “the courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy of our men and women who gave their lives in service to our country” from 11 a.m. to noon at Idlewilde Cemetery, 980 Tucker Road, on May 26. This has been an annual tradition at Idlewilde since 1928.
A vintage military aircraft from WAAAM will fly over the site at 11 a.m. Included in the ceremony will be the posting of the American flag, welcome and prayer, flag folding presentation, special guest speaker and former Vietnam prisoner of war USAF Colonel Lynn Guenther (retired), the presentation of floral pieces, and a cannon salute and Taps. All are welcome to attend.
The Dalles American Legion Post 19 hosts its annual service at noon at Kelly Viewpoint Veteran’s Memorial, located across from Sorosis Park. All servicemen, active, and reserve, as well veterans of all conflicts and all eras and their family members are encouraged to attend.
