PORTLAND — Oregon Wildlife Foundation (OWF) is holding a joint press conference to recognize the 25th anniversary of the Sturgeon Interpretive Center, home to “Herman the Sturgeon” at 10 a.m. on Sept. 27 using their Zoom meeting platform.
All are invited to learn about the purpose of the center, its current needs, and hear from experts Dan Green, Bonneville Fish Hatchery manager with the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW); Tucker Jones, ODFW Sturgeon Project leader and Columbia River program manager; and Tim Greseth, OWF executive director.
The presentation will begin at 10 a.m., and questions will be taken via chat from 10:20-10:40 a.m.
About the center
The Sturgeon Interpretive Center was built at Bonneville Fish Hatchery to provide a safe and comfortable habitat for Herman and a venue through which the general public can learn about this unique and long-lived fish species.
OWF, in partnership with ODFW, raised more than $350,000 to construct the Sturgeon Viewing and Interpretive Center at the hatchery. Dedicated on Sept. 27, 1998, the center is one of Oregon’s top visitor attractions, according to a press release.
The center continues to serve its original purpose but prolonged exposure to Columbia River Gorge weather and a need to update interpretive signage is spurring the Foundation and ODFW into action. OWF is readying a capital fundraising campaign to make essential repairs to the building, habitat improvements within the pond, and updated messaging regarding white sturgeon and their conservation.
The Sturgeon Viewing and Interpretive Center is located at Bonneville Fish Hatchery, 70543 NE Herman Loop, in Cascade Locks.
