DUFUR — A fire near the Wasco County Landfill on Aug. 7 roared to life, quickly gaining ground on firefighters as 20-30 mph winds on ridgetops fanned the flames into nearby wheat and grasses, prompting several area residents to evacuate.

Highway 197, Five Mile Road, and Eight Mile Road were also closed at one point as officials worried about the potential for spot fires.
