STEVENSON — Skamania County Senior Services has partnered with Jenn Wright, MS, OTR, to offer a three-part information series on death and dying with a local end-of-life doula and a Hospice physician. The community is invited to attend any or all three sessions.
“This series offers a wonderful opportunity to gather information about resources, supports and options for end-of-life,” said Maria Spencer, director of Skamania County Senior Services. “It’s a reality check that we each will die and demonstrates how talking about that reality can bring us more fully into living the preciousness of life.”
Session presenters will include End-of-Life Doula Tamara Theil and Tina Castanares, M.D., a hospice physician.
Session 1: Aging and Planning End-of-Life, 2:30–4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 27 at the Hegewald Center, 710 SW Rock Creek Drive, Stevenson.
Topic description: What supports might we want during our dying time? A written death plan can communicate your values, needs and preferences for optimal and unforeseen scenarios along the time spectrum of illness, during dying time and after death.
Session 2: End-of-Life Care and Choices, 2:30–4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3 at the Hegewald Center, 710 SW Rock Creek Drive, Stevenson.
Topic description: We will look at care and support of the dying in our midst. We will look at the landscape from diagnosis to death, palliative care and hospice, medical aid in dying, and voluntary stopping eating and drinking, and assembling a personal care team. Jennifer Wright, MS, OTR, will be on hand to discuss Medicare coverage for hospice and how to maximize your benefit.
Session 3: Death Care, 2:30–4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10 at the Hegewald Center, 710 SW Rock Creek Drive, Stevenson.
Topic description: Historically, care for the dead was handled by family and community, and legally it is still our right to do so. We will review the aspects of death care now and the choices honoring our dead with celebrations, natural home funerals, cremations, green burials, and more.
There is a suggested donation of $10 for each session to cover the travel costs of the speakers and snacks for the session. You are invited to attend one, two, or all three of the sessions. Each session will include handouts, additional resources and time for questions and answers.
