THE DALLES — The Dalles High 2024 graduate Sam Shaver signed a letter of intent on May 31 to attend Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, where he’ll continue his athletic career playing on the Saints’ baseball team.
Shaver was accompanied by numerous friends and family members in a signing ceremony at The Dalles High School’s main lobby. Shaver will play on the Saints’ baseball squad for head Coach Korey Keir. After playing for two years at the junior college level, Shaver is hoping to achieve his ultimate goal and transfer to a larger university and play for another two years.
Shaver was the top pitcher his senior year on the OSAA Class 4A Tri-Valley Conference champion The Dalles High Riverhawks’ team. Shaver also played first base, helping lead the Riverhawks to their first league title in 20 years and a second straight state playoff berth.
The Riverhawks (21-8), guided by second-year Coach Pat Clark, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 16-team state playoffs.
“On behalf of our entire coaching staff [Bailey Ortega, Ed Ortega, Tim Foley], we’re really proud of Sam for moving on to play college baseball,” said Clark. “This is something that Sam has always wanted to do. We’re extremely proud of him; he’s a great kid and we wish him the best in the future. We’ll really miss having a good lefty on the mound, too. Sam really put in lots of hard work, and he made a tremendous amount of improvement over the last couple of years. Our success last year wouldn’t have been what it was without him.”
Shaver capped his The Dalles High career by being selected for an OSAA second team all-state award and he also earned the TVC pitcher-of-the-year Award. In addition, Shaver and his Riverhawk teammates Nolan Donivan and Cooper Klindt were selected to play in the OSAA Class 4A Senior All-Star Baseball Series June 15-16 at North Marion High School in Aurora. Donivan and Klindt are also 2024 The Dalles High graduates. Clark was selected to be one of the coaches in the all-star series, as well.
