Come hear the epic Mongol Derby adventures of Shandie Johnson, an Oregon equestrian, who traveled across the globe to compete in a 10-day 1,000 kilometer (625-mile) horse race across the Steppes of Mongolia.
Shandie grew up in a Gilliam County rodeo family. As she transitioned into adulthood, she took a brief hiatus from the horse/rodeo world to focus on her college education and raising her children. In 2010, she was able to return to her equestrian roots and moved to Sherman County with her partner Rory Wilson - an avid supporter of Shandie's horse 'addiction' and crazy adventurous side.
Shandie will be paying a special visit to the Hood River Saddle Club on Tuesday, October 8 at 6:30 p.m. to share her adventure. It is filled with exciting twists, turns and challenges, such as riding a different horse each day, where she spent the nights, the food, the wonderful people she met and the culture she experienced. The visual splendor of the Mongolian landscape will be on full display through her unique photos, and she looks forward to answering questions.
Here is a snippet from Shandie on her once-in-a-lifetime experience:
"The Mongol Derby is a 1,000 km (roughly 625-mile) horse race across the Steppe in Mongolia. We are given 10 days to complete the race and are only able to ride from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
"In my race, there were 28 horse stations ranging from 25-40 km apart (about 15-1/2 to 25 miles). At each station, we got a new horse to learn all about on our ride. The horses are semi-feral (this is a very true statement)! On each leg of the race, there was always adventure - everything from horses bucking or running off to dealing with men who thought they could take advantage. (I have a good story on that)!"
All are welcome! We look forward to seeing you at HRSC, corner of Country Club and Belmont, to hear the amazing equestrian journey of Shandie Johnson.
