OREGON — As about 5 million migrating birds are predicted to fly through Oregon between Sept. 22-24, Bird Alliance Oregon is asking cities and homeowners to turn off night-time lights.
Outdoor lights and glowing windows can disorient songbirds who migrate in the dark, navigating in part by the stars. Disoriented birds can crash into windows and buildings, or become lost, exhausted and vulnerable.
You can help by clicking off all unnecessary night-time light and drawing the curtains, according to Bird Alliance (formerly Audubon Society). This includes decorative lights on buildings, flood-lights and pot lights and also inside lights (especially on higher stories).
Whenever possible, Bird Alliance suggests using strobe lighting, motion sensors, and installing shields on outdoor light so they shine only on the ground directly underneath.
Late-working professionals can, if possible, light up just their active work area, or pull the blinds.
If they survive, migrants in the Pacific Northwest Flyway may winter on territories as distant as Mexico, Central and South America.
