The Hood River Valley High Eagles had a fantastic start to their OSAA Class 5A softball season who won two nonleague games.
The Eagles (2-0) came from behind to beat host Scappoose, 5-4, in their March 13 season opener, and then topped visiting Lake Oswego 17-6 on March 15. Scappoose was a Class 4A state playoff semifinalist last year, and Lake Oswego made the 6A playoffs a season ago.
Against Scappoose, the Eagles got a run in the fifth, trimming the margin to 3-2. An RBI-triple by Kenadie Lucas drove home Abri Lopez. Addison Van Metre hit an RBI-double to drive home Grace Rowan and later scored on a fielder’s choice, putting the Eagles up 4-3 after five innings. In the top of the seventh, Sarah Mason hit a leadoff double and two batters later Rowan’s RBI-single drove home Mason, lifting HRV in front 5-3. The Indians added a run in the bottom of the inning for the final margin.
The Eagles had eight hits, including a single and double by Marina Castaneda. Senior Bryanna Alvarez also had a hit for HRV. Junior hurler Rowan pitched the complete game with eight strikeouts.
Coach Madelynn Vallejo said: “I’m so proud of these kids; we have a very young team (five freshmen, two sophomores), but they’ve all been working very hard every day at practice.”
Against Lake Oswego Mason, Rowan, Lucas, and Van Metre each had three hits and Castaneda had two singles. Alvarez, freshman Isa Rivera, and senior Adamari Lazaro each hit singles. Lucas pitched five innings and she had three strikeouts.
“We’re very excited; the kids are really hungry and they’re just looking forward to taking it one game at a time — whether we’re facing 4A teams or 6A teams,” Vallejo said.
The Eagles will face the St. Helens High Lions, a 2023 Class 4A state playoff squad, in their next contest Thursday at 4 p.m. at St. Helens High School. The Eagles will then leave March 25 to Phoenix, Arizona, where they’ll play in a spring break tournament.
